What Precisely Is Famanon?

Families Anonymous is a world-wide collaboration of family and friends who have been hurt due to somebody else's abuse of mind-altering substances or behavioural problems. Different Fam Anon member groups in various locations across the county meet frequently. You don't have to be a member to attend the meetings, it is encouraged that any worried person does.

In 1971, the Fam Anon was founded by a group of families in America. 1980 marked the formation of the first group in London spearheading creation of 50+ groups with common goal in different parts of the country.


Fam Anon fellowship member groups are self-help organization that run 12 Steps and 12 Traditions programs founded on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.


How Can It Help?

The group's goal is to support families and friends of persons with the present, potential or past drug related issues by offering mutual support and a place to share experiences and concerns. In this group, understanding how they can accept the issue that is causing distress in their lives is the aim of every group member.

The broader mean of helping family and friends simply implies helping them in critical situation in drug and liquor addiction.


Group gatherings enable members to have an honest and steady relationship with the addict. Sharing of concerns and difficulties stirs individuals in the group to take a stand against drugs.

In 1980, the first group in this country started in London and now in various parts of the UK there are some 50 groups.


The focus is on helping families and providing them support while coping with the addict. It offers the addicts a possibility to get in charge of their lives once again and to find a reason to live drug-free life.

There are different operating methods in Families Anonymous. It first and foremost quality originates from sharing of normal issues. Memberships and meetings are all completely free. Fam Anon does not accept any funds from outside bodies or solicitors. Volunteers run the office and contributions from meetings and sale of Fam Anon literature cover the day to day office management running costs.


Only first names are given at Fam Anon since it is an anonymous programme.


Fam Anon group members learn to adjust and cope with challenges of dependence in the life of loved ones.


Members adopt an honest and consistent approach towards the addict by attending meeting. Addicts are led to consider alternative ways of gaining control to quit and live normal lives again.
